WHAT WE BELIEVE - Jesus is God
This past week, we began a new sermon series called What We Believe. The purpose of this new series is to explore the catechism of the Global Methodist Church and reacquaint ourselves with the doctrines that we hold as disciples of Jesus Christ. What is a catechism? As I explained this last Sunday, a catechism is a series of fixed questions and answers, along with precepts, that are intended to instruct and teach on a particular subject. More precisely, in Christianity, catechism is a summary of the principles of Christianity in the form of questions and answers used for the instruction of Christians. This methodology is not new but is, in fact, an ancient form of teaching used throughout the centuries to simplify and codify Christian doctrine.
Last week we spoke about God as Father, the first person of the Trinity. This week, we will be talking about the second person of the Trinity, Jesus. We will be attempting to answer, as best we can, the question of Jesus’ identity. The Apostle Paul gives us a precise picture of this identity in the first chapter of his letter to the Colossians. "The son is the image of the Invisible God, the firstborn over all creation” (Colossians 1:15).
This week we will be looking at that statement, and others, as we explore the identity of Jesus of Nazareth.
