The Mind Renewed: The Interior Work of Grace
How do we truly surrender our lives to God? In this message from our series The Way to Surrender, we explore Romans 12:1–2 and the powerful truth that real Christian transformation begins with renewing your mind.
The Apostle Paul calls believers not to conform to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds so they can discern God’s will. But what does that actually look like in everyday life? And how do we live differently in a world that constantly shapes our thoughts, attitudes, and priorities?
In this sermon, we reflect on how discipleship begins internally. Following Jesus is not only about changing behavior—it’s about allowing God’s grace and the Holy Spirit to reshape the way we think. When our minds are renewed, our hearts, actions, and relationships begin to change as well.
For the first followers of Jesus, surrendering to Christ meant far more than attending worship or adopting new religious habits. Many faced persecution and even death for their faith. When Jesus told His disciples to take up their cross and follow Him, and when Paul urged believers to offer their bodies as living sacrifices, it was a call to a completely transformed life.
That same invitation still applies today.
God calls His people to live differently—to think differently—than the culture around them. Instead of conforming to the values of the world, believers are invited to live according to the Kingdom of God, guided by Scripture and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Throughout the message we also look at Romans 8:5–8, which contrasts two ways of living: a mindset focused on the flesh, and a mindset shaped by the Spirit. One leads to separation from God, while the other leads to life and peace.
Scripture reminds us that the transformation God desires begins in the mind. As God promised in Jeremiah 31:33, He writes His law on the hearts and minds of His people. Through Christ, believers are invited into a new way of thinking that leads to a new way of living.
As we continue through The Way to Surrender, this message invites each of us to reflect on a simple but challenging question:
What is one way God is calling you to renew your mind today?
During this season of reflection, may we ask God to reshape our thoughts so we can better discern His will and live lives that reflect His love and grace.
