WHAT WE BELIEVE - Belonging: Communion

Wesleyans, and specifically Global Methodists, believe that there are two sacraments laid out in the Bible. Last week, we spoke about the first sacrament, baptism. We were reminded that through baptism we are initiated into the church and incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation. In a very real sense, baptism makes us Christians in that it confirms the internal work of God in us. The water itself isn’t magical but symbolizes our appeal to God to begin the work of renewal within our hearts.

The second sacrament, holy communion, is also of great importance to Wesleyans. Similarly to baptism, holy communion, also known as the Lord’s Supper, is a reminder of the table of Christ open to all who love Him, who repent of their sin, and seek to live in peace with one another. Communion is a means of grace in which we encounter the risen Christ present with us as we receive this sacrament. At the table of Christ, we find community, we find grace, we find hope, and the reminder that we will one day be together with Christ and each other in the Kingdom of Heaven.
