The path of discipleship - counting the cost

Do you remember who told you about Jesus and how you became a disciple of Christ?

Christianity grows when we fulfill our call to make disciples of all nations. The church grows when we talk about Christ to other people and invite them to be disciples of Jesus; it is then that God adds day by day to those who are saved.

Many people first hear about Jesus during moments of personal crisis—struggles in marriage, family, work, or finances. Others encounter the message of hope while in hospitals or prisons. That’s why we go to these places: to share the love and truth of Jesus Christ with those who need it most.

We pray for people when they are in need, and that is right; we must pray and help each other. We affirm that God can help them in their need, and that is true; God can do that. But we do not often advise them of the cost of following Christ. Imagine telling someone, “Discipleship means surrendering your personal ambitions out of love for Jesus.” It’s not an easy message, but it’s a necessary one.

Following Jesus comes at a price; it requires the total surrender of our lives. Discipleship demands sacrifice, but its reward is eternal life in Jesus Christ. Have you truly considered the cost of being a disciple of Jesus? Are you ready to lay everything down and follow Him?

Join us this Sunday as we worship together and reflect on the cost and rewards of being a disciple of Christ.
