How Do I Rightly Divide the Word of Truth?
This week, we will be exploring the spiritual discipline of study. The study of scripture is not simply a cursory reading now and again. It isn’t even the simple reading of scripture. Either of these methods only scratch the surface of the discipline. Instead, we are to enter into a set-aside space and time in order to give our full attention to this practice.
Writing on the topic of study, Richard Foster gives us not only the steps of studying the scriptures—repetition, concentration, comprehension, and reflection—but also the approach. "We come as wholehearted learners. We stand under the text of Scripture, under the book of nature. Without this pervasive spirit of humility, study will only produce arrogance in us. A haughty spirit undermines humility of heart.”
Humility is the quality necessary as we study the scriptures. We have to be willing to consider that the scriptures, and the God that inspires them, may contain more about life than we know. We have to be willing to open our hearts if we really want to know and walk in the truth.
My prayer for us in this season is that, in addition to making the time to study, we also approach it with the right attitude.
Grace & Peace,
Rev. Adam Thornton
