Why Do I Need to Serve?

In Mark’s gospel, chapter ten, we find Jesus in a discussion with James and John. These two disciples, brothers, are asking Jesus for a favor. They ask Him for places of honor and prestige in the Kingdom of God. As the discussion goes on, the other disciples begin to hear what James and John are asking of Jesus. They become indignant at the political machinations of James and John.

What Jesus does next is very instructive. He tells them they shouldn’t behave as the gentiles do; desiring power and prestige. Instead, He sets the standard for them by example. He reminds them in Mark 10:45 that He came not to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many.

This week, we will be exploring the meaning of Jesus’ words in answer to the question: Why do I need to serve?
